Frequently Asked Questions
What if I’ve never fired a handgun?
Not a problem! The first part of the class is “hands on” and will cover the basic operation and use of a handgun. This is a great way to familiarize with handguns and learn how to use them correctly. I have had numerous students take my class having never fired a handgun and they passed the tests with ease. You will also be able to practice shooting prior to taking the shooting portion.
What will I need in order to take your class?
On the day of the class, you will need eye protection (eye glasses work), ear protection, pen and paper, 30 rounds of ammo (more if you wish to practice before the test), and a handgun. If you do not have a handgun, you can either borrow one from a friend or use one of my loaner handguns. Please make sure all guns are in working order and are safe to operate. If I feel that a gun is not safe to operate, I will provide a loaner gun for you to use. In addition, NO LIVE AMMUNITION is allowed inside the classroom. Please make sure it stays in your vehicle until it is time to take the shooting qualification.
Do I need to be a member of the Wake County shooting range to take the class?
No, I have the range reserved after normal business hours so you will not need to be a member during this time.
How large are the classes?
My classes are limited to sixteen participants. This allows for a smaller, more interactive setting. It also allows me to work with individuals on a one on one basis as necessary to ensure they fully understand how to safely operate and use a firearm.
How hard are the tests?
There are two tests that are required in order to get your concealed carry permit. The first is the written exam which consists of 50 questions and are multiple choice, true/false, and fill in the blank. All of the material will be covered in the class and we will have a short review prior to the test. The second test is the shooting proficiency exam where you will fire 10 rounds each at distances of 3, 5, and 7 yards at a standard silhouette target. 70 is considered a passing score for both exams.
What other costs are involved in getting my concealed carry permit?
Once you have completed this course, you will take your certificate of completion to your county’s sheriff’s office and fill out the application and provide 2 sets of fingerprints. There is a $80 application fee along with a $10 fingerprint fee associated with this. Once this has been completed, the sheriff’s office will notify you when your permit is ready for pickup.
How do I know if I am eligible to get a concealed carry permit?
To be eligible for a concealed handgun permit, the Applicant must be:
- 21 years of age or older (at the time of the application, you may take the course prior to your 21st birthday)
- A United States citizen
- A resident of North Carolina for 30 days preceding the filing of the application
- The applicant must not suffer from a physical or mental infirmity that would prevent the safe handling of a handgun
In addition, you must not have had any felony convictions, convictions of certain misdemeanor crimes (mainly assault and weapons charges). You also can not have any convictions of an impaired driving offense in the three years prior to the date of application.
What if I don’t own a handgun?
You may borrow one from a friend or use one of my loaner guns.
Can me and my friend share a gun?
Two people can share the same handgun. We do the shooting portion in two alternating groups of eight. You will just have to take turns once we get to the range.
What if I can’t find any ammo for my handgun?
I have ammunition available in most popular calibers. Please email me and let me know what caliber you will be using and I will let you know the cost.
